About Ferry Services To Cozumel

While Cozumel has its own airport, most people find it cheaper to fly into Cancun and make the journey to Cozumel via bus and ferry. The additional transportation from the Cancun International Airport to Cancun via bus and ferry ends up being less expensive than purchasing a direct flight into Cozumel. The transportation time from the Cancun airport to your final destination in Cozumel should take no more than three hours.

The ferries come to Cancun from Playa del Carmen, one of the Riviera Maya's best beach. Playa del Carmen is directly west of Cozumel, making it the easiest and most convenient route. If you fly into the airport in Cancun, you can take a bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen. Once in Playa del Carmen, you can take one of two ferries that transport passengers to Cozumel. Each ferry typically leave once an hour and runs from early in the morning until well into the night. Many people who are staying in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or somewhere else along the Riviera Maya coast take the ferry for a day trip or an overnight trip to Cozumel.

The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel takes approximately forty-five minutes. Both of the ferries have refreshments for beverages on board, including beer. They also have TVs where they show reruns of old television programs or movies. Tickets are available at booths close to the ferry booth and on booths on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. The busiest time of the day for the ferries is the morning rides since workers who are heading to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen pack the ferries. Even still, the ferries rarely, if ever, sell out completely. The cost of the ferry is typically about $12 each way. If you need to bring a car to Cozumel, there are ferry docks in Puerto Morelos and Calica (two other areas along the Riviera Maya coast) that offer ferries for cars and passengers.
