The main dolphin facilities in Cozumel are located in the heart of the island at the Chankanaab National Park. The Chankanaab National Park is one of Cozumel's gems. It is made up of a stunning archaeological park, beautiful botanical gardens, and a large saltwater lagoon. Its status as a national park, a status which was decreed in the year 1980, helps protect the integrity and pristine beauty of the park, which is populated by hundreds of unique plant and flower species.
The archaeological park of Chankanaab consists of reproductions of small Mayan villages as well as stone carvings from various groups and tribes that populated the area in and around the Yucatan (Olmec, Toltec, Aztec, and Mayan). The botanical gardens consist of a large variety of tropical flora and fauna. You get to walk through these beautiful natural gardens and take pictures of the vibrant floral displays. Though the gardens faced severe damage after Hurricane Wilma struck in 2005, they have seen a significant recovery. The path that cuts through the gardens leads out to the sea, making it a truly picturesque and scenic walk.
The beach in Chankanaab National Park is also one of the most picture perfect and scenic beaches in all of Cozumel, and that is saying a lot once you see the beaches in Cozumel. On this beautiful natural beach you will be able to swim, lay out in the sun, and even go snorkeling right off the shore. If you are interested in scuba diving, this too is available in Chankanaab National Park. The scuba diving destinations include underwater caverns, a sunken ship, and an eerie sunken sculpture of the Virgin of the Sea. Of course, as in most places you go snorkeling and scuba diving, the national park has strict rules about touching the coral reef structures or feeding the marine life. It is a protected national park so they are even more strict than normal.
The park also has facilities for showering, dressing rooms, and lockers. You will find a restaurant, a snack shop, a dive shop, and gift shops in the park as well. The park is located some 9 miles from Downtown Cozumel (San Miguel de Cozumel) and it is easily accessible by taxi cab ride. There is an entrance fee but guests who are attending one of the park's dolphin programs get to enter for free.
