Cozumel's proximity and close ties to Cancun make it a relatively simple destination to visit. While Cozumel retains a small-town ambiance different to Cancun's glamorous and over-the-top feel, the island is very much primarily a tourist destination. This means, for one thing, that the majority of locals know how to deal with visitors. English, for example, is widely spoken by Cozumel locals, especially those in the tourism industry. While Cozumel offers a centralized downtown tourist area that is great for day visitors (such as those visiting on cruise ships), the island is best appreciated when wandering outside of the main tourist area. You can easily come to Cozumel on a cruise ship without knowing the first thing about the island, but this limited knowledge of Cozumel will offer you a limited experience. Before coming to this unique and quaint Yucatan island, do some research on the island and explore the many attractions and activities offered from Cozumel.
While Cozumel is generally very safe, make sure to always be aware of your surroundings and don't wander outside of the main tourist area without knowing the exact location of your destination. Many people like to rent a car to explore the small island. This is definitely a great way to see some of the beautiful sights that Cozumel has to offer. It's best to rent a car from a major agency, and you will find plenty of agencies in Downtown right by the cruise ship docks.
Make sure that when driving around Cozumel you stick to the paved roads, as most of the car rental insurances do not cover incidents that happen on unpaved roads. With a rental vehicle, you will be able to head over to Cozumel's windward coast and explore the beautiful, remote beaches located in that side of the island. Rental cars will also allow you to easily reach some of the Mayan ruin sites such as San Gervasio (though Mayan ruins tours do offer transportation so you could also fore-go the rental car in exchange for a complimentary ride from the tour company).
Many people will tell you that you should not drink the tap water in Mexico. Since Cozumel is such a popular tourist destination, most places offering water are offering purified water with purified ice cubes. Even still, it's not that inconvenient to simply buy bottled water, which is readily available at most restaurants.
When using currency, the overwhelming majority of establishments in Cozumel accept American dollars. Still, some people will tell you that using Mexican pesos will actually save you some money, as establishments can inaccurately calculate the currency exchange and overcharge you. Be vigilant when purchasing something and try your best to make sure you are not being overcharged.
