Dolphins are one of the world's most beloved creatures. With their distinctive intelligence, charming sociability, and starring roles on various TV programs and movies, dolphins have won the hearts of humans the world over. There is a certain spark and spunk to dolphins that no other animal seems to achieve to the same extent. Dolphins are truly unique. Once you interact with them face-to-face you will have an even greater appreciation and understanding of these fascinating marine mammals.
There are nearly forty distinct species of dolphins ranging from the small 4-foot Maui's dolphins to the large 30-foot orca (more commonly known as killer whales). The most recognizable species of dolphin is the Common Bottlenose Dolphin, found in temperate and tropical oceans throughout the entire world. They are typically the dolphins you see in aquariums, on TV, and close to land. They are gray in color and typically measure between 6.5 and 13 feet.
The bottlenose dolphin has the advantage over other dolphin species of having a very flexible neck due the the fact that only 2 of their 7 vertebrae are fused together. And even though almost every dolphin species has been seen to display social and cultural behaviors, the bottlenose dolphins are also known to bone one of the most sociable and group dependent. Like most dolphins, they are typically found in groups called “pods” which can range in size from two dolphins out for a hunt to groups of over 100 dolphins (and groups of up to 1000 have been seen before).
Bottlenose dolphins have a diet that is made up primarily of eel, squid, shrimp and other smaller fish species. They swallow their food whole. When hunting they use an effective technique called echolocation works similar to sonar: the dolphins send out noises (usually clicking-style noises) and then wait for the echo. Using this technique they are able to figure out the location and even size of their potential prey.
The Common Bottlenose Dolphin is also known for its high level of intelligence. Scientists have tested the dolphins' intelligence on a variety of measures including mimicry, use of artificial language, self recognition and being able to pinpoint and categorize objects. They have also shown high levels of success in training. They have been trained to do everything from acting in front of a camera (see Flipper), performing at aquarium shows, and detecting sea mines for military purposes. They have proven themselves to be both highly entertaining and quite useful for human culture.
It is no wonder why these marine mammals have the reputation they do! With the Cozumel dolphin programs, you will able to see these fascinating dolphins live and in action right in front of you!
